“The Sound of Music” debuted on the American stage in 1959 and was released as a movie in 1965. It was composed by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. It’s based on the 1949 memoir “The Story of the Trapp Family Singers” by Maria von Trapp. Set in Salzburg, Austria, the musical is a fictional retelling of von Trapp’s experiences as governess to seven children, her eventual marriage to their Georg von Trapp, and the family’s escape from the Germany-annexed Austria in 1938.
