LATROBE, PA – From Feb. 8 – 13, Saint Vincent College Campus Ministry, the Office of Student Affairs, the Office of Campus and Multicultural Life, the Center for Catholic Thought and Culture, the Saint Vincent College Concert Series, the Uniting All Peoples Club and the Respect Life Club will team up to offer a series of virtual speeches, presentations, musical performances, Masses and other special activities open to the Saint Vincent community to commemorate ‘Life in Christ’ week.
In addition to the events listed below, throughout the week, Campus Ministry will distribute information on Project Rachel, a post-abortion counseling and reconciliation program.
Monday, Feb. 8 – Together We Strive
Saint Vincent College president Father Paul R. Taylor, O.S.B., will welcome students back for the spring 2021 semester and introduce the special programming for the week with a video address to the Saint Vincent community.
Tuesday, Feb. 9 – Together We Worship
Saint Vincent Campus Ministry will unveil its “Voices of Faith” video series on the Saint Vincent College website and YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/SaintVincentCollege). The videos will feature students representing a multitude of Christian denominations discussing their faith.
At 7:30 p.m., the Saint Vincent Center for Catholic Thought and Culture and the Saint Vincent College Concert Series will present a Zoom concert featuring acclaimed Christian singer and songwriter Sarah Hart. Hart has released 11 albums, with her songs appearing in television, movies and hymnals across the world. She has composed songs performed by such notable artists as Amy Grant, Matt Maher and Newsboys, with Grant’s recording of Hart’s 2011 song “Better than a Hallelujah” earning a Grammy nomination for Best Gospel Song. In 2011, Hart wrote a musical on the life of Saint Bernadette, entitled “Bernadette of Lourdes,” and it has been performed in theaters and schools across the U.S. In 2013, she was invited to perform for Pope Francis in front of a crowd of 150,000 in Saint Peter’s Square. She has also authored four retreats and regularly serves as a keynote speaker at workshops, diocesan conferences and youth ministry events across the country.
Wednesday, Feb. 10 – Together We Inspire
The life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be celebrated with events sponsored by the Office of Campus and Multicultural Student Life and the Uniting All People’s Club.
At 12:30 p.m., the Saint Vincent community will be invited to view a Zoom presentation by Ryan Bomberger, Emmy Award-winning creative professional. Bomberger is a broadcast media designer, producer, columnist, international public speaker and author of the powerful book “Not Equal: Civil Rights Gone Wrong.” Bomberger has regularly published articles addressing the cultural dynamics of abortion, adoption, eugenics, natural marriage, fatherlessness, racism, poverty, LGBT, free speech and religious liberty and is the founder and chief creative officer of The Radiance Foundation, a life-affirming educational nonprofit aimed at illuminating the intrinsic value each person possesses and educating audiences on pressing societal issues and how they impact the understanding of God-given purpose.
Bomberger’s presentation will include a live question-and-answer session. Upon its completion, the winners of Saint Vincent College’s annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Poetry Contest, sponsored by the English Department, will be revealed. The theme of this year’s contest is “our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” The winning poem will be recited by its author.
The celebration of Rev. Dr. King will also include a Dream Center, sponsored by the Uniting All Peoples Club, from 11 a.m – 3 p.m. in the Robert S. Carey Student Center Lounge, while a birthday cake for Rev. Dr. King will be served in the Community Center dining hall during dinner hours.
At 7 p.m., the Saint Vincent Center for Catholic Thought and Culture will host a Zoom presentation by Dr. Patricia Sharbaugh, associate professor of theology, entitled “The Power of a Soul Who Loves God: Exploring Women’s Leadership in the New Testament.” Sharbaugh’s Zoom presentation can be viewed at https://stvincent-edu.zoom.us/j/96182086640?pwd=bzJLNng3ZG9kRnJtbk1YOFV6R0dyUT09.
Thursday, Feb. 11 – Together We Pray
On the World Day of Prayer for the Sick, a special Mass for Health and Healing will be celebrated in the Mary, Mother of Wisdom Student Chapel at 12:05 p.m. Open to the campus community, it will also be livestreamed.
At 7 p.m., the Saint Vincent Center for Catholic Thought and Culture will welcome Professor Helen Alvaré, a professor of law at George Mason University’s Antonin Scalia Law School, for a presentation on the future of Roe v. Wade. Alvaré’s presentation from the Fred M. Rogers Center will be livestreamed via Zoom at https://stvincent-edu.zoom.us/j/96089148808?pwd=SUZTdUxpY1NaUlh2eThnRndyVGZUZz09 and will include a live question-and-answer session moderated by Dr. Jerome Foss, associate professor of politics and chair of The Center for Catholic Thought and Culture.
At 8 p.m., a Vigil for Life Mass will be celebrated in the Mary, Mother of Wisdom Student Chapel and livestreamed. Mass will follow with Eucharistic Adoration throughout the evening and extending overnight.
Friday, Feb. 12 – Together We Love
At 3 p.m., Campus Ministry, the Respect for Life Club and the Center for Catholic Thought and Culture will sponsor Benediction and eucharistic procession, leading into a 4:15 p.m. Mass offered for the intention of the Respect for Life Club.
At 7 p.m., the campus community is invited to the Performing Arts Center in the Robert S. Carey Student Center to take part in a Common Hymn.
At 9 p.m. in the Carey Student Center Lounge, the campus community is invited for a showing of the movie “Unplanned.”
Saturday, Feb. 13 – Together We Care
The Respect for Life Club will welcome a pair of speakers for virtual presentations on adoption and foster parents. At 12:30 p.m., foster parent Maria Kessler will lead a talk on foster care. At 2 p.m., Michelle Parrish, an adoptive parent of children who have Down’s Syndrome, will deliver a talk on adoption.
