LATROBE, PA – The Foster and Muriel McCarl Coverlet Gallery at Saint Vincent College will ring in the 2024 New Year by hosting a live performance of handbells in the Gallery on Wednesday, January 10th, 2024. The student handbell choir of the Valley School of Ligonier, conducted by Mrs. Deborah Broker, will play several musical selections from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The public is invited to explore the Gallery as the choir provides live music. The doors will be open from 6:00-8:00 PM, and admission is free.
The current gallery exhibit is entitled "How People Made Coverlets: A 19th Century Factory Tour Inspired by Mister Rogers." It explores the transition from cottage industry to factory automation over the course of the 19th century through the lives of the people who made and used the beautiful antique textiles in the McCarl Collection. The exhibit consists of antique handwoven bed coverlets, 19th century weaving equipment and multimedia excerpts from “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.” It runs through February 29th, 2024.
“This event brings talented young people from our community into the gallery to freely share their musical gifts with guests of all ages,” explained Dr. Emily Barth, McCarl Gallery curator. “What a fitting way to celebrate the legacy of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” whose people-oriented perspective on makers and their craft has inspired our current exhibit!”
The Foster and Muriel McCarl Coverlet Gallery is located in the Fred M. Rogers Center on the Saint Vincent College campus. The McCarl Gallery is open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and at other times by appointment. For additional information, please visit www.coverletgallery.org or call 724-805-2188. To schedule an appointment, contact Dr. Barth at emily.barth@stvincent.edu.
