LATROBE, PA – Saint Vincent College’s Herbert W. Boyer School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computing will present a lecture on the history of cryptography by Dr. Alexander Diaz-Lopez at 7 pm on Thursday, March 31, in the Luparello Lecture Hall in the Dupré Science Pavilion.

Free and open to the public, Dr. Diaz-Lopez's presentation is part of Forward: A Boyer School Lecture Series, which celebrates the diversity of those practicing in the school’s academic disciplines and to remember the work of Saint Vincent College founder Archabbot Boniface Wimmer, O.S.B., who came to the area to serve the immigrant population of Southwestern Pennsylvania.

Dr. Diaz-Lopez is a mathematics professor at Villanova University. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez. He furthered his studies at the University of Notre Dame where he earned both his Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics.Dr. Diaz-Lopez headshot

The recipient of the 2021 Mathematical Association of America’s Henry L. Alder Award for Distinguished Teaching, Dr. Diaz-Lopez is the co-founder of a variety of programs such as Latinxs and Hispanics in Mathematical Sciences, Math SWAGGER, DREAMS and Co-Master. These programs aim to give students a deeper understanding of mathematics and provide preliminary guides to prepare for education beyond undergraduate studies.

Dr. Diaz-Lopez's presentation will address the history of cryptography and explore the future of encryption methods. As encryption methods continue to advance, this presentation will discuss the role encryption plays in the possible development of a post-quantum future.

Dr. Diaz-Lopez is the fifth speaker in the Boyer School series. Previous presenters included Dr. Robin Hensel, assistant dean in the Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering at West Virginia University; Dr. Gail Baura, professor and director of engineering science at the University of Loyola-Chicago; Dr. Gregory Robinson, Foundation Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at the University of Georgia; and Dr. Cameron Coates, director of engineering studies at Armstrong State University.

Further information about Dr. Diaz-Lopez's presentation and the Forward series is available by contacting the office of Dr. Stephen Jodis, dean of the Herbert W. Boyer School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computing at 724-805-2631.
