LATROBE, PA – The winners of the fifth annual Saint Vincent College Martin Luther King Jr. Poetry Competition were announced at the College’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Dinner on Monday, Jan. 20, in the Fred M. Rogers Center.

First place honors went to junior English major Julia Snyder of Murrysville for her entry entitled “Insomnia,” which was recited to the crowd of more than 200 people by competition judge Michelle Gil-Montero, associate professor of English.

Second place honors went to “The Woman and the Man,” by Samantha Hilyer, a sophomore English major from Patton, while “Prisoner of Flesh and Mind,” by Nicole Fratrich, a junior English education major from Seward, placed third.

Designed to recognize and encourage student writing of multicultural poetry, the MLK Day Celebration Poetry Competition is sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Student Life as part of its goal to spread awareness and understanding of King’s vision.
