Research Opportunities
Here at Saint Vincent College, we encourage our students to take an active approach to learning. Toward this end, our students have opportunities throughout their academic careers to participate in active scholarship through service-learning projects, study abroad experiences and term-long course projects that promote deep scholarly inquiry.
Research Opportunities
As students prepare to graduate, they fulfill a discipline specific capstone requirement that requires them to conduct an independent scholarly project under the mentorship of a faculty advisor. These projects give them an opportunity to put what they have learned into practice, demonstrate their abilities and gain experiences that will help them as they pursue professional pathways or continue on to graduate school.
Many students take advantage of the student research and travel grant funding that Saint Vincent College offers in the form of Palumbo Research Grants and Andreoli Travel Grants. These grants have supported student research all over the world from South Africa to Thailand to Guatemala as well as right here in the United States.
Each year, we celebrate this culture of independent inquiry by convening an Academic Conference during which students give oral presentations, performances or posters on their major projects.
Academic Conference
The annual Academic Conference provides an opportunity for students to publicly present their research and creative works. April 2023 will mark the 20th year for the conference. At The Academic Conference, students present on their senior thesis research, significant class projects, service-learning activities, internships, and study abroad experiences in both oral and poster format. Musical performances, poetry readings, and the artwork of visual art students also take place during the Conference.
The Academic Conference showcases the magnificent work our students do and celebrates their accomplishments at Saint Vincent College. In addition, the Academic Conference accentuates much of what makes Saint Vincent a special place, providing evidence of close student-faculty relationships, highlighting research opportunities, and representing many facets of the liberal arts.
The 2023 Academic Conference will take place on April 26, 2023, in the Sis and Herman Dupré Science Pavilion and the Verostko Center for the Arts.
Student Research Grants
The A.J. Palumbo Student Research Endowment
Established in 1996, the Palumbo grant program supports student initiated learning and discovery in the arts, sciences, humanities, and professional programs. Grants are awarded on the basis of proposals submitted by the students and reviewed by a committee comprised of both faculty and students. The endowment memorializes the late Mr. A.J. Palumbo, a noted Pittsburgh industrialist.
