LATROBE, PA – The Herbert W. Boyer School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computing at Saint Vincent College will host the 2025 meeting of the Allegheny Mountain Section of the Mathematics Association of America.
The annual event will be held March 28-29 at the Fred M. Rogers Institute on campus.
Featured speakers will be Dr. Rick Cleary, professor of business analytics at Babson College; Dr. Emilie Purvine, senior data scientist at Pacific Northwest National University; and Dr. Danny Otero, associate professor of mathematics at Xavier University.
Cleary will speak on “Connecting Traditional Math to a Modern Application: Discrete Probability and Fraud Detection.” He also will conduct a workshop on “Creative Assessments and Surprising Sports Analytics.” The workshop will explore how math topics such as linear algebra, optimization, probability, voting/ranking methods and even topology can be applied to sports.
Purvine will speak on “Mathematics for Cyber Security.” Otero will speak on “Teaching Mathematics via Primary Sources: Is It Worth the Challenge?” Dr. Dan Kalman, professor emeritus of mathematics and statistics at American University, will conduct a faculty workshop on “Elementary Math Models: A Hybrid Alternative to College Algebra/Liberal Arts Math/Quantitative Literacy Courses.”
